Romagnoli’s proposed move to Al-Sadd has virtually collapsed, with Lazio unwilling to grant him an exit.
According to The Laziali, the 31-year-old pushed to leave after Claudio Lotito’s pay-rise promise went unfulfilled. Roberto Mancini’s Al-Sadd put forward a three-year contract worth €6 million per season.
Romagnoli accepted and expected Lazio to follow after an offer of around €9 million arrived. Instead, last Sunday the club performed a U-turn and declared him off the market.
With the Qatari window closing at 19:00 CET on Saturday, he sought Maurizio Sarri’s approval. The head coach declined to authorise it, not wanting personal responsibility for the decision.
Alfredo Pedullà reports Romagnoli made a last-ditch push, meeting the hierarchy on Saturday, but met a firm refusal. He could rejoin training next week and the report says the saga will leave a lasting mark.
Sky Sport Italia says a late breakthrough now looks highly unlikely. The knock-on effect on Diogo Leite, said to be close to joining from Union Berlin, remains unclear.
