"If I played for Flamengo today, with the structure Flamengo have, I would score a lot of goals." He was speaking to the podcast O Gringo Convoca.
"I played in two teams of that level, Barcelona 93/94 and Vasco 2000. They were teams that had to be respected."
"Today’s football is very physical and the tactical side has much greater relevance than in my time. I believe I would be even more successful in today’s game."
Romário joined Flamengo after being named the world’s best player and winning the 1994 World Cup. He wore the shirt from 1995 to 1999.
He scored 204 goals in 240 games, an average of 0.85 per match, making him the fifth-highest scorer in the club’s history. He lifted the Copa Mercosul in 1999 and the Campeonato Carioca in 1996 and 1999.
Flamengo’s squad are on holiday during a calendar pause for the World Cup. Their next fixture in 2026 is set for 22 July, against Chapecoense in the 19th round of the Brasileirão, after a training camp in Portugal with friendlies against Falkirk, Birmingham and Benfica.
