Tottenham delivered a timely response to their domestic struggles by comfortably beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in North London, a result that leaves them firmly on course for automatic qualification to the Champions League Last 16.

Under mounting pressure, Thomas Frank saw his side produce one of their most assured performances of the season, particularly in a dominant first half that effectively settled the contest.

Spurs started with energy and intent, pressing Dortmund high up the pitch and forcing early mistakes. Their breakthrough arrived when a loose clearance fell to Wilson Odobert, whose low ball across the box was calmly swept home by Cristian Romero for his first Champions League goal.

Moments later, the visitors’ night unravelled further. Daniel Svensson was dismissed following a VAR review for a high boot on Odobert, leaving Dortmund with a mountain to climb.

The hosts took full advantage of the extra man and doubled their lead before the break, Dominic Solanke getting the final touch on Odobert’s cross to mark his first start in months with a goal.

The English side continued to create chances either side of half-time, with Xavi Simons pulling the strings and Pedro Porro a constant threat down the right.

Dortmund briefly threatened from a set piece early in the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were kept in check by a composed Spurs defence.

The victory lifts Spurs into fourth place in the standings, two points clear of the cut-off for automatic qualification with one match remaining.
