Romero’s game time at Corinthians drops 80% as contract ends

With a long history at Corinthians and a strong connection with the fans, forward Ángel Romero is currently experiencing a low point at the club. The Paraguayan, whose contract runs only until December 31, 2025, is going through a period with few minutes on the pitch.

A survey conducted by the Central do Timão editorial team found that the playing time of the number 11 dropped by about 79.66% in the second half of 2025 compared to the first half of the year. At 33 years old, Romero’s situation at Alvinegro is uncertain, and he has yet to begin negotiations to renew his contract.

In the first six months of this year, Ángel Romero took the field 37 times for Corinthians, scoring five goals and providing three assists. During this period, the forward played around 1,945 minutes, averaging 52.6 minutes per match.

In the second half of the year, however, the situation is completely different. There were 12 games for Timão, with no goals scored and no assists. During this period, the number 11 played approximately 399 minutes, averaging just 10.7 minutes per game.

The forward’s loss of space began especially after the rise of other names in Corinthians’ attacking sector. In addition to the starting duo of Memphis Depay and Yuri Alberto, the young players Gui Negão and Kayke began to get more playing time under Dorival Júnior and moved ahead of the Paraguayan in the squad rotation.

Besides them, forward Vitinho, the only signing of the second half, also received many opportunities from the coach before suffering a medial meniscus injury in his right knee, surpassing not only Romero but also Talles Magno in the competition for attacking spots.

In total, Ángel Romero has played 373 matches for Corinthians and scored 67 goals, holding the records for the foreign player with the most appearances and goals for the club, as well as being the second-highest scorer at Neo Química Arena, with 43 goals in 176 games. The player has won five titles with the club: three Paulista Championships (2017, 2018, and 2025), and two Brazilian Championships (2015 and 2017).

The forward may have another chance to take the field this Wednesday (5th), when Corinthians will face Red Bull Bragantino at 7:00 PM (Brasília time), for the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship. The match will take place at Estádio Municipal Cícero de Souza Marques, and the tendency is for Romero to start on the bench.
