Memphis Depay is fit for the Netherlands’ World Cup Group F opener against Japan in Dallas on Sunday and could start, according to Meu Timao. Ronald Koeman said the line-up has been discussed but will remain under wraps.
Koeman added the No 10 is fully recovered after injury and has built up well since joining the camp.
He admitted doubts when Memphis moved to Corinthians, questioning match rhythm in Brazil. After visiting the country, he highlighted the league’s level and the intense atmosphere, saying injuries were the only issue.
Memphis joined Corinthians in September 2024 on a free after Atlético de Madrid, aiming to return to the national team after Euro 2024. He impressed on arrival and helped deliver the 2025 Paulista title against Palmeiras.
He re-established himself internationally, finishing European qualifying as the Netherlands’ top scorer with eight goals and eight assists, and becoming the country’s all-time leading scorer on 55, with 36 assists in 109 caps.
A grade 2 right thigh injury on 22 March, in a 1-1 draw with Flamengo, kept him out for over two months. He returned on 25 May against Atlético-MG, then played 46 minutes in a 2-0 Libertadores defeat to Platense.
He came on at half-time in a 1-0 loss to Algeria on 3 June, then stayed on the bench for the 2-1 win over Uzbekistan. Corinthians receive 5,000 dollars daily while he is at the World Cup, and contract talks continue with his deal up at July’s end.
