Al Nassr captain opens up in Piers Morgan interview about personal grief

Ronaldo breaks silence on missing Diogo Jota’s funeral
Cristiano Ronaldo addressed the reason behind his absence from the funeral of Diogo Jota, the late Liverpool & Portugal forward who tragically passed away in July 2025 in car accident in Zamora, Spain.
Ronaldo’s decision not to attend sparked widespread criticism across social media with many questioning his silence despite his long standing connection with Jota through the Portuguese national team.
In candid interview with Piers Morgan, broadcast this week, the Al Nassr star explained his decision saying it stemmed from both personal principles and desire to protect the privacy of the ceremony.
"I didn’t want to turn it into a spectacle"
The 40 year old revealed that since his father’s death, he has never visited cemetery, adding:
"You know my reputation — wherever I go, it turns into something like circus. I didn’t want that kind of attention at Diogo’s funeral"
Reports at the time suggested Ronaldo privately reached out to Jota’s family expressing condolences and providing support away from the cameras.
"My support for Diogo’s family was private. I didn’t need cameras to prove my sincerity" Ronaldo concluded.
