Rotherham United are keen to sign Duncan Watmore if Sheffield Wednesday opt against signing the ex-Millwall forward

League One side Rotherham United are waiting in the wings to sign free agent Duncan Watmore, if Sheffield Wednesday opt not to strike a deal to bring the versatile forward to Hillsborough.

The 31-year-old has been without a club since leaving Millwall in the summer, but has drummed up interest from Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in recent weeks, as they look to add to their squad after entering administration.

The Owls were unable to spend fees on any players in the summer after being placed under embargo, which saw them solely relying on free agents and loans to try and craft a squad competitive enough to overturn their points deduction.

However, Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham are ready to pounce and offer Watmore a proposal if Wednesday decide not to pick him up, according to reports from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning.

The former Sunderland man has been training with the Steel City side after they were given permission to sign an extra player, but their county rivals are reportedly set to pounce if the Owls opt against signing him.

The next destination of former Millwall winger Watmore still remains a mystery, after a failed move to Stockport County earlier in the month, having trained with Dave Challinor's side to keep his fitness levels up.

Since then, the 31-year-old has reportedly been training with Championship bottom side Sheffield Wednesday, after they were given permission from the EFL to sign another player, having seen some of their transfer restrictions relaxed.

However, the plot has thickened, as Nixon confirmed on Sunday morning that Yorkshire rivals Rotherham have tabled a proposal to Watmore, whilst Wednesday are deciding on whether they want to sign him or not.

It was reported that the Millers are hoping the winger will choose them over the Owls, who are still yet to decide whether they will use their extra signing on him, or pursue other options.

Matt Hamshaw's side are unbeaten in their last eight League One outings, and have certainly exceeded expectations thus far, following a rough start to the season. The addition of Watmore would bring some extra pedigree to an already strong side.

Duncan Watmore must now weigh up options ahead of next move

After fighting back from a double ACL injury earlier in his career, Watmore revealed he was happy to be patient over his next move after departing Millwall at the end of his contract in the summer.

However, with a proposal reportedly on the table from Rotherham, he may not hang around if Sheffield Wednesday continue to delay their decision on signing him, particularly if the offer from the Millers is better than what the Owls can produce.

Divisional status will likely come into play as well, as despite being bottom with a points deduction, Watmore will be getting regular Championship minutes with Henrik Pederson's side, which could be a key selling point for him.
