Speculation over another potential high-profile change in the Old Trafford dugout has continued to rage on following a disappointing start to the season under Ruben Amorim, who also could not engineer any sort of turnaround last term after succeeding Erik ten Hag and has remained under significant pressure.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s latest insistence that Amorim is not in any danger of the sack and “needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years” is unlikely to do much to quell the constant discussion over the Portuguese’s future if the Red Devils are unable to build on the momentum gained from the 2-0 home win over Sunderland, with a trip to face out-of-form rivals Liverpool at Anfield coming up straight after the international break.

A number of names have been put forward as potential successors in the event that United were to part ways with Amorim, who has been in charge of United for 11 months now after leaving Sporting, with Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes stating earlier this week that he would opt for Newcastle’s Eddie Howe.

However, fellow United heroes Keane and Neville are in agreement that Simeone would be the perfect choice having proven his quality and passion for management during 14 memorable years in charge of LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid, who recently hit five goals past rivals Real Madrid in a derby thrashing.

“I’d like to see Simeone go in there,” Keane said on the latest edition of the Stick to Football podcast, broadcast in Rome.

“I know his mate [former Atletico sporting director Andrea Berta] has gone to Arsenal, but I think he would just create havoc. But good havoc.

“I think he’d rock up to that place and say, ‘hey, this is how you do things’. Obviously no guarantee, but I’d just like to see his personality, his track record.”

After Ian Wright suggested former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte as a potential alternative, Neville interjected: “I think I’d go with Simeone. I like Simeone.”

Keane added: “They [Atletico] beat Real Madrid and they scored five goals, this idea that he’s defensive... yeah, he doesn’t like his teams giving up too many goals or chances, but they can play a bit.

“They’re fighters. We saw them up at Liverpool [in the Champions League] a few weeks ago, the team aren’t as great as they were a few years ago but there’s still that fighting spirit.

“He’s on the sideline causing... he got sent off that night, didn’t he. I’d like a big personality.”

Neville then said on Simeone: “I think he gets talented players working in a ridiculous way.”
