Serie A side Milan now have Ruben Amorim in-charge as manager and the Portuguese replaces Max Allegri, only months after having been sacked by Manchester United.

His tenure at Old Trafford never really got going. It somewhat became a hallmark of his inflexibility as manager and he failed to adapt to the squad and the club’s culture.

He had his first press conference as Milan manager today and he opened up about his time at Manchester United.

The Portuguese made it clear he did get some things wrong.

He said – via Sportmediaset: “It’s difficult to explain the mistakes; I should explain the context. I learned, I learned a lot. I made mistakes, but I’m proud to have been at United. But now that’s another story.”

Amorim also explained the reason why he has joined the Rossoneri.

“After the first meeting, something clicked in me. The team offered me things I liked, and I wanted to uphold those values. I was introduced to the structure and the scouting process. When you feel like you have the right people around you , when there’s a team around you, then all the ingredients for the challenge I want to take on are there.”

He also made it clear that he has a responsibility to take Milan to new heights.

“I remember Ancelotti, I also watched Sacchi a lot, his style brought so many innovations to football. Not to mention Capello. Milan’s past is the whole ensemble of players, from Van Basten to Gullit. If I had to choose just one memory, it would be very difficult. I’ve followed him since I was young. I feel this responsibility.”

Big challenge for Amorim

In terms of stature and national relevance, Milan are very similar to Manchester United. Amorim can’t afford to be inflexible at a club like that and he would have to adapt to the demands of a huge footballing institution.

That is the demand of the job, especially as the club has had off-field worries and he would have to do a lot of man-management when difficult situations are thrown at him. He will also often have an imperfect squad and that is where he would have to adapt his playing style too.
