Portuguese sees plenty of room for improvement but AFCON departures will complicate future matches
Ruben Amorim said fine details cost Manchester United as they drew 4-4 with Bournemouth on Monday.
The Red Devils lost the lead twice in the eight-goal thriller at Old Trafford, leaving Amorim frustrated at full-time.
United have now dropped seven points in their last three home matches, and while he acknowledged the match was ‘fun’, Amorim was disappointed not to have taken the spoils.
"It was a fun game for everyone at home,” he admitted at full-time. “I think we started really well. We did a good first half.
"The result should be completely different. And then again, six minutes of the second half, similar to Nottingham [Forest], we lost the concentration, and they score two goals.
“But we managed to get back to the game, we scored two goals again, and then we have to finish the game. Just a throw-in in our possession, we have to close and think about not to go again, to stay calm and close the game.
"I saw the effort of the players, I saw the effort of the defence, and at the end of the game, you make 4-3, I had the feeling that we would continue to push and score another one. We tried but in the end it was a draw.”
In spite of United’s dip in home form, Amorim insisted United remain on an upward trajectory.
“When you win away, you should win at home, but we need to focus on the performance today was different from the last two at home. So that is a point we take, pay attention. The result is the same, it is one point, it is frustrating, but the performance is different.
“A lot of good things, but a lot of things to work [on]. We are not winning games sometimes in the details. It's not because it's a back four, back three, back five.
“It's the details that we need to work, understand the momentum of the game and we need to be clinical. Again, today against a very good team, we created many chances to win the game, and we should have won the three points."
Things will get no easier for Amorim from here, though. He was without Noussair Mazraoui for the match due to his AFCON commitments, with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, who scored the opener on Monday, due to follow suit.
While his options in attack will be slimmed, he said he looks forward to working around the problem.
“That is the fun part of being a manager. You will try to find solutions with the players that we have. After last season I think we are ready to cope with whatever they present in front of us.
“So let’s move on. We already have some injuries - all the teams in England have injuries - we will try to find a way to score goals in a different way.”
