Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing assessment of Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United, describing the Portuguese coach’s reign as “a disaster for both the club and the manager” and urging all parties to “shake hands and move on.”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher was unsparing in his evaluation following United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford, a result that left the club languishing in 14th place with just 34 points from Amorim’s 33 league matches in charge. “The quicker they make the decision on the manager, the better for everybody,” Carragher said. “We are just waiting for the inevitable.”
Carragher argued that United’s hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have hesitated to act not out of faith in Amorim, but through reluctance to admit to another misjudgment after years of poor decision-making at Old Trafford. He added that Amorim’s rigid adherence to his preferred 3-4-2-1 system was ill-suited to United’s traditions and has left the squad ill-equipped to compete.
“What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. He looked like the next big thing,” Carragher noted. “But his system never suited Manchester United. It has been a disaster for him and for the club.”
The former Liverpool defender further suggested that the squad, bolstered by £200m of attacking reinforcements in the summer, could flourish under a more pragmatic coach. “A competent manager could get that team into Europe,” he insisted, highlighting the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško as players who could thrive in a more conventional set-up.
Carragher concluded with sympathy for Amorim, acknowledging his promise as a young coach, but reiterated that United’s current plight demands change: “It could not have gone any worse… better for everyone to shake hands and move on.”
Manchester United will next face Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.
