Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is desperate to add some quality to the midfield, with the current players either unfit for purpose or injured.
He is currently saddled with two 33-year-olds in Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, both of whom have struggled to deal with his intense demands which explains their lack of starts since Amorim took the reins.
Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount are both injured and the ex-Chelsea star’s injury record makes it difficult to trust him moving forward while the 19-year-old’s future remains up in the air.
The head coach has been forced to play Bruno Fernandes as a deep-lying playmaker due to the lack of options, something he would like to change in the summer.
However, given the financial reality, United are in no position to spend exorbitant sums which is why there is a growing chance that the Red Devils choose to pursue former Carrington graduate Angel Gomes.
The Lille star’s current deal ends in the summer and CaughtOffside have claimed that Amorim has given the green light for the 20-time English league champions to pursue his signature.
“Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen for the club to seal the transfer return of Angel Gomes as he becomes a free agent this summer.
“The Lille midfielder, who had a spell at Man Utd as a youngster earlier in his career, is nearing the end of his contract with his current club, and it seems the Red Devils are keen to bring him back to Old Trafford.”
The 24-year-old has Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig hot on his tail but he would prefer to return to the Premier League and he has admitted in the recent past that he would find it hard to turn down an approach from the Old Trafford side.
“There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no,” the England international was quoted as saying by The Times.
Gomes can play as a defensive midfielder, as part of a midfield pivot as well as an attacking midfielder, just what Amorim likes from his midfielders which is exactly why he is so “keen” for his return to his home.
However, Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa are also eyeing the Englishman and a summer race is on the cards to land the soon-to-be free agent.
His homegrown status, previous Premier League experience coupled with age makes him the perfect INEOS signing. Not to mention the fact that he would cost nothing and his current wages of €13,654 gross per week are pretty meagre as well (via capology).
It remains to be seen what the player chooses in the end. One thing is for sure, he has really elevated his game since leaving Manchester, starring for the Ligue 1 side and even breaking into the England national team set-up.
