Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt went off injured in Sunday’s game against Brentford, and Ruben Amorim has said he is worried about the seriousness of the ailment.
United lost the game 4-3, but with their league position being 15th and unable to improve much between now and the end of the season, the Portuguese may be more concerned about the injury his defender has picked up.
De Ligt had to go off in the 35th minute after a collision with Yoane Wissa. Speaking after the game, Amorim said: “I don’t know so I’m really concerned [but] not about Thursday. We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect [him] and have players for Thursday, but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury [for De Ligt] and thinking about next season.”
If this is to be a long-term setback for the Dutchman it could place United in a precarious position going into next season. Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are both set to leave the club this summer, whilst Lisandro Martinez won’t be fit for the start of next campaign.
This could mean the Red Devils feasibly go into next term with only two fit senior centre-backs. They already need a big summer of signings, without the added expenditure of an extra centre-back.
Amorim, however, will now be turning his attention to Thursday’s huge game against Athletic Club. The Europa League poses the final chance for United to salvage what has been a disastrous season.
With a first leg lead of 3-0, and home advantage this week, you would not bet against the English side getting the job done and reaching the final, which could set up an enticing encounter with fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham Hotspur.
United do have a growing injury list and will be thankful they have a large lead to rely on going into this crunch game.
