Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim with immediate effect following controversial comments after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United, a result that proved decisive, the club said in a statement.
The decision follows underwhelming results and mounting tension behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and guided United to the Europa League final, where they lost to Tottenham, missing out on the Champions League.
United are sixth in the Premier League with 31 points from 20 matches, chasing direct Champions League qualification but adrift of the leading pack.
In the aftermath of the Leeds game, Amorim said he had come to be the club’s manager rather than merely a coach, noted he was not Tuchel or Conte, and insisted he would not resign, adding he would continue for 18 months unless replaced.
Across 63 matches in charge he recorded 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 defeats. United thanked him for his contribution and wished him well. Darren Fletcher will take charge.
