Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim less than 24 hours after the 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
The club said in a statement that Amorim, appointed in November 2024, took the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May, and with United sixth in the Premier League it was the right time to make a change. It added that Darren Fletcher will take charge against Burnley on Wednesday and thanked Amorim for his contribution.
At Elland Road, Leeds went ahead on the hour through Brenden Aaronson, before Matheus Cunha equalised three minutes later.
After the match, Amorim grew frustrated when asked about his future, objecting to being labelled a head coach rather than a manager and leaving while questions continued.
He said he would not quit, would work for 18 months unless replaced, and argued the club must handle external criticism.
