Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo appears to have fallen out of favour with manager Ruben Amorim.
Over the past few months, Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt. Having once been in fiery form for Man United, Mainoo has experienced a severe lack of game time recently, with rumours swirling around about his potential departure from the club as a result.
Now, it seems as if Mainoo’s woes at United are only deepening.
The transfer race is on
In September, The Peoples Person noted that United are open to allowing Mainoo to leave the club in January so long as the team finds a suitable replacement.
Previously, it appeared as if he could have gone out on loan in the summer, although no such move was made.
With Mainoo seemingly available for transfer, Napoli have emerged as an interested party, with the Italian club reportedly working on a loan deal with an option to buy.
Should Mainoo leave for Napoli, he would be following in the footsteps of former teammates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund, the latter of whom is currently on loan.
Meanwhile, the midfielder is believed to be open to a loan move to Real Madrid in January, although it’s tough to see how he would be able to guarantee himself playing time given the depths of the Spanish giants’ squad.
But even if his playing time for the likes of Real Madrid and Napoli is questionable, he may be forced to make a move given that his career at United could take an even worse turn if a new report is to be believed.
Mainoo’s opportunity is over
Last night, it was reported (Daily Mail via TEAMtalk) that Amorim has no plan to allow Mainoo to start a match for United anytime soon.
“Amorim’s treatment of Mainoo has been one of the great puzzles of his United tenure,” Daily Mail reporters Chris Wheeler and Nathan Salt commented, adding that he is unlikely to start a match for United anytime soon.
“The young midfielder’s future at Old Trafford had been unexpectedly thrown into doubt long before Amorim replaced Ten Hag because of PSR rules and the ‘pure profit’ generated by homegrown players. United cashed in on Scott McTominay last year and did the same with Alejandro Garnacho this summer,” the reporters explained.
“Mainoo wanted to go out on loan this season, and Napoli were waiting to reunite him with McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund. United stood firm, wary of the backlash from fans if they allowed such a popular academy graduate to follow Garnacho and Marcus Rashford out of the club,” the report continued, before delivering a harsh conclusion.
“But it hasn’t swayed Amorim’s selection decisions, and Mainoo remains a frustrated bench-warmer. Considering Fernandes’ remarkable injury record – and the coach’s reluctance to play them together – the situation is unlikely to change anytime soon.”
While many United fans would reel at the possibility of losing a talent like Mainoo, the youngster may have no choice but to seek a loan if he is to get time on the pitch and revive his stalling career.
