Sheffield United showed no signs of slowing down in their pre-season preparations as they swept aside local rivals Rotherham United with a commanding 5-0 victory at the New York Stadium at the weekend.

The Blades looked sharp, organised, and ruthless in front of goal, putting on a clinical display for their travelling supporters against the League One outfit.

The breakthrough came after 15 minutes when Ryan Oné produced a moment of individual brilliance. Picking up the ball on the left, the powerful forward surged through Rotherham’s defence and his powerful low drive took a slight deflection but found its way past the goalkeeper to give United a deserved early lead.

Manager Ruben Selles rang the changes at half-time as expected, but the Blades maintained their momentum. Just four minutes after the restart, Jefferson Caceres threaded a sublime through ball into the path of Tyrese Campbell, who stayed calm under pressure to slide his finish past the onrushing goalkeeper and double the lead.

On 63 minutes, Andre Brooks added a third. The versatile winger drove into the right channel of the penalty box before shifting the ball onto his left foot and slotting it home.

The fourth came in the 72nd minute. Tom Cannon, brought down just outside the area, dusted himself off and struck a fierce low free-kick into the near post, catching the Rotherham wall and goalkeeper off guard.

The scoring was complete five minutes from time. Brooks, once again influential, pinged a pinpoint diagonal pass into Cannon’s feet. The striker flicked a clever ball through for Callum O’Hare, who curled a first-time effort into the top corner to cap a stunning team performance.

Sheffield United next face another League One side in Burton Albion on Tuesday evening, as preparations continue. A couple of the standout players across the first two games have been Andre Brooks and Ryan Oné, two youngsters that have played on the opposite flanks thus far, and both have bagged in Ruben Selles’ first couple of matches as Blades boss.

Selles was full of praise for Oné when he spoke to SUTV after another high-scoring affair, with the Scottish youth international continuing to impress with his directness and physicality:

“It’s not just about his goal contribution, it’s very clear that he has that goal contribution. I think he’s a player who has been applying himself very well from the very first day. Any of the front three positions suits him with the way he plays the game, and for the moment, I come with him and I count on him.”

Selles was pleased with the team’s overall performance, though acknowledged there is still plenty of work to be done.

He said:  “I think we are doing a lot of things we said we wanted to do. Still, there’s a lot of pictures in the game and defending scenarios that we’ve not been able to manage due to the time we’ve had together, but, so far, the situations we’ve had so far in the two matches and in training, the team is getting there pretty quick and we need to continue building because every team is so different. I believe we have more levels to add in our game.”

Sheffield United Youngsters Looking to Impress

One player that did not feature against Rotherham at the weekend was talented holding midfielder Billy Blacker. The 19-year-old midfielder has just joined Tranmere Rovers on a season-long loan after making two senior appearances for United. Blacker did play against York City where he screened the defence nicely and even got involved in progressing the ball through the thirds, albeit against lesser opposition.

There’s still plenty of time for other youngsters to make their mark this pre-season and potentially find a loan move to get more accustomed to regular senior football. As for the likes of Oné, he’s looking like one of United’s most potent threats ahead of the 25/26 Championship season.
