Correio da Manhã reports that Benfica president Rui Costa was left deeply unhappy after a video emerged showing José Mourinho in a Real Madrid shirt, used in Florentino Pérez’s election campaign.
He was said to be surprised and irritated by the image, viewing it as a possible show of disrespect towards Benfica, with whom Mourinho still has a valid contract.
The president had not expected to see the coach publicly linked to another project before his Benfica situation was formally settled, a stance shared by other senior figures who were shocked by the public exposure.
Soon after the footage surfaced, Mourinho is understood to have contacted Benfica to deny any involvement, saying the clip was generated by artificial intelligence, which helped to ease Costa’s reaction in part.
Costa had planned to wait for a direct call from Mourinho to communicate his decision, but that contact never arrived. The prolonged silence added to his displeasure before the matter became public via Pérez’s campaign.
