On Tuesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced that goalkeeper Ryan Campbell has extended her contract, keeping her with the club through 2028. She was signed through the end of this season, which was assumed to be a friendly contract to see how she would do in her first year as a professional.

Clearly, Campbell has done well in training since Gotham extended her stay in New Jersey. Moreover, one might assume that the club views her as the backup keeper for next year since Ann-Katrin Berger is signed through 2026. Shelby Hogan, who also joined the Bats this year, is currently the second-choice keeper. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for her.

At the same time, Gotham FC might be building for the future. Hogan and Campbell could be a part of that plan, which is why Campbell has signed the contract extension. Berger is 34 years old and might only have a few more years left as a starter. And as mentioned, she is only signed through 2026. Hence, there could be a battle for the starting role afterward, and one of the other two keepers could claim that role.

Plus, Campbell is only 23 and has so much room to grow as a player. She is learning under Berger and Campbell, and has fantastic coaches to teach her as well. Then, the Bats might be thinking about the possible NWSL second division that could start in 2026. The keeper could earn minutes and continue her growth while Berger is the starter.

The goalkeeper's new contract highlights her belief in the club and how it is the best place for her to continue her career at this time. "Re-signing with Gotham for the long term is an incredibly proud moment for me," Campbell told gothamfc.com. "As a collective, I truly feel that my values, both as a person and as a player, are reflected here. I'm committed to continuing my growth and evolving into the kind of goalkeeper this franchise can count on."

She added, "I'm deeply grateful to be pursuing my professional goals in a market that aligns so well with my passions, on and off the pitch. It’s a gift to learn from the established players around me and to receive such consistent support from our staff, ownership, and management."
