Paris Saint-Germain won the Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday, beating Flamengo 1-1 after extra time, 2-1 on penalties, thanks largely to goalkeeper Matveï Safonov, who made four decisive saves in the shootout.

Before that, a clearance of his was charged down and he gathered a rare shot on target at 17 minutes. He was not the first to be caught by the Jorginho-style hop on the 62-minute penalty, but once the shootout arrived he unsettled the Brazilians.

Warren Zaïre-Emery delivered a huge shift in volume and duels. He produced a driving break on 30 minutes during a quiet Paris spell, won important defensive battles, and a turnover drew a rebuke from Marquinhos at 40 minutes. He also misjudged a throw-in on the Brazilian equaliser, and is clearly emerging as a high-level right-back.

Captain Marquinhos initially imposed himself, vocally and with authority, cutting out several situations with precision and aggression. Two moments then turned his final the wrong way, beginning with the penalty conceded to Arrascaeta, a costly reflex for PSG.

He later spurned a huge chance at 90+6, unable to turn in a very lively ball from Dembélé.
