After the 2-2 Copa Sudamericana draw at Vila Belmiro, San Lorenzo head coach Gustavo Álvarez said he was insulted and struck by Santos supporters as he left the pitch, according to Diario Do Peixe.
On the field, Santos went 2-0 up before conceding twice after the interval, and they remain bottom of Group D on four points.
Álvarez said the route to the dressing rooms took the visitors past home fans, which triggered confusion. He mimed a blow to the head, urged that visiting coaches should not be made to walk through home sections, and said he had never experienced such a situation in football.
The incident will be reported to CONMEBOL, and Santos could face punishment depending on the body’s review in the coming days.
Cuca’s side can no longer win the group, but second place remains possible and would lead to a play-off against a Libertadores third-placed team. To stay alive, they must beat Deportivo Cuenca next Tuesday at 21:30 Brasília time at Vila Belmiro, and they also need other results to go their way. Before then they meet Grêmio on Saturday in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
