Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala claims he has done everything in his power to help push through a sale of the San Siro site to Milan and Inter, but admits that the matter could still go either way just a few days shy from the city council’s decisive vote.

The Milan city council are meeting on Thursday to discuss the potential sale of the San Siro site, including the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, to the football clubs AC Milan and Inter.

If the sale is approved, it is understood that Inter and Milan will look to completely renovate the stadium. Recent reports claim that over 90% of the ground in its current form will be demolished to make way for a new, state-of-the-art ground.

Foster + Partners, led by the iconic Norman Foster, and MANICA, who specialise in the building of sporting venues, already have agreements with Milan and Inter to design the new ground if the city council approves the sale of the site.

The potential sale of San Siro will be discussed by city council members on Thursday, and the matter will be taken to a vote on Monday.

The clubs need a majority of councillors to vote in favour of the San Siro sale. In the event that the vote ends level, there will be one more re-vote. If that ends level for a second time, approval will not be granted.

Mayor Sala, speaking ahead of the city council meeting on Thursday, insisted: “I think I’ve negotiated as best I can with the teams.

“I’ve done a lot of negotiating in my professional career, it’s certainly nothing new at the moment. I’ve done everything I can. Now we have to wait for approval.

“Obviously I hope for a decision in favour, after which, however, I can’t guarantee anything.”

Reports from Calcio e Finanza indicate that the councillors are split evenly on the matter, and that the vote could still go either way.

“It’s an issue that I understand is divisive, but also, councillors need the true freedom of thought and must do their part,” Sala said.

Thursday’s reports suggest that 24 of the 49 Milan city council members intend to vote in favour, and that 24 intend to vote against. That leaves one councillor left over. Calcio e Finanza suggest that that person is Marco Fumagalli.

“I’ve seen him, I understand his thoughts,” Sala said. “He has reservations. He hasn’t decided yet, we have to see what he will do.

“I’ve explained to him why, in my opinion, Milan needs to have a new stadium. I told him ‘decide with your conscience, think about it’. I can’t say for sure what he will vote for. Where we left things last night, he hasn’t decided yet. We’ll see.”
