Sandro Wagner today confirmed that he will leave his role as assistant manager to Julian Nagelsmann in the German national team after the UEFA Nations League Finals in June.
The 37-year-old has been assistant to Nagelsmann since September 2023 having previously worked with the U20 national team and was also a coach to the senior squad under Rudi Völler prior to Nagelsmann’s arrival.
Since the turn of the year, Wagner is also undergoing a course to attain his DFB Pro License, the highest German coaching badge.
A highly thought of coach, Wagner had interest from Bundesliga clubs in September but opted to stay with the DFB, but is now ready to “take the next step.”
In a statement released on the DFB website, Wagner said: “Working as assistant coach of the German national team was and remains a huge honour for me. I will always be grateful for this opportunity and I’m proud that we have achieved so much with a great coaching team.
“The European Championship at home, in particular, will remain an unforgettable experience for me. But I want to take the next step soon.
“It’s not secret that it’s my dream to work as a head coach myself one day. With the start of my football coaching training in January, this became increasingly clear to me.
“I informed everyone involved about his in open and very helpful discussions. I’m grateful for their understanding. Together, we can now fully focus on our next big goal: winning the Nations League on home soil. I will give it my all.”
