Around 25 Sanse players will join Real Sociedad’s 30,000 travelling support at La Cartuja on Saturday, heading to Seville by bus after their league game against Racing in Anoeta. According to Diario Vasco, they will watch the Copa del Rey final from the stands as fans.
La Liga brought their fixture forward to Friday 17 April to free them for the final. After the 20.30 kick-off, the squad will board an overnight coach, aiming to sleep en route, then spend Saturday in the city and attend the match. Their return is set for Sunday, so celebrations by the Guadalquivir are possible if Real win.
The B-team’s involvement is tangible, with five players, Beitia, Astiazaran, Carrera, Dani Díaz and Ochieng, featuring in this season’s cup run. Three more, Mariezkurrena, Fraga and Carbonell, were called up but did not play. Head coach Jon Ansotegi also had a hand, overseeing the third-round win over Eldense during the transition from Sergio Francisco to Matarazzo.
Most of the group are Gipuzkoa-born and lifelong Real supporters. Balda and Mikel Rodríguez even joined the throng that welcomed the first team home after the semi-final against Athletic. Real to the core.
Despite taking only one point from their past five matches, Sanse hold a seven-point cushion above the drop with seven games remaining. After hosting Racing they visit Valladolid then face Burgos at home. Perhaps two more victories could be enough to secure their Segunda status.
