Santos now have six regulars who cannot join another Brasileirão side this season, with nine squad members over the 12-game limit.

According to Globo.com, the domestic window opens on 20 July, but clubs are already active. The six starters over the threshold are Gabriel Brazão 16, Igor Vinícius 13, Luan Peres 15, Gabriel Bontempo 16, Benjamín Rollheiser 14 and Barreal 15.

Three frequently used reserves are also affected, Willian Arão 13, Rony 14 and Moisés 13.

Escobar, Christian Oliva and Gabigol are on 12 and sit at the limit. Escobar’s deal runs out at the end of the year, so from next month he can sign a pre-contract elsewhere. Gabigol, who is contracted to Cruzeiro, is not expected to surpass the threshold quickly as he will serve a one-match ban after being sent off against Vitória.

Neymar has featured in only eight league matches, having been managed for workload. He is with Brazil for the World Cup and, like Escobar, is out of contract at year’s end. His future is likely to become clearer only after the tournament.

João Schmidt has 10 appearances, while Lucas Veríssimo and Thaciano are on 11.

Those earmarked to leave in a mid-season overhaul are not a concern here. Right-back Mayke has played three times and Tomás Rincón twice. Zé Ivaldo has five outings but has not featured since the 5 April defeat to Flamengo in round 10, and fellow midfielder Zé Rafael, who has been training separately, also has five.
