Santos are chasing progress in the Copa Sudamericana and Copa do Brasil to ease cash flow, with prizes aimed at wages and image-rights arrears. According to Globo.com, results between late July and early August are key.
They thrashed Universidad Central of Venezuela 4-1 away in the play-off for a place in the last 16. The return is on 28 July at Vila Belmiro, and they can lose by up to two goals and still advance.
Participation in this stage has already brought R$ two and a half million, and progression would add R$ three million. The total prize could reach R$ 70 million if they win it. On Tuesday the board paid one of three overdue months of image rights.
Their Copa do Brasil tie with Remo will be settled between one and four August, first at Vila Belmiro then in Belém do Pará. They entered at the fifth phase and, after knocking out Coritiba, have R$ five million. Quarters add R$ four million, semis R$ nine million, runners-up R$ 34 million and champions R$ 78 million.
Santos are likely to call on Neymar in those fixtures, though his high monthly cost has left a debt near R$ 100 million. His deal runs to 31 December and he intends to see it out. The number 10 should return on Saturday against Chapecoense in the 20th round at Vila Belmiro.
