According to Globo.com, a year after it was unveiled, Santos’ proposed Praia Grande training centre, fronted by Neymar’s father, remains at a standstill.
Planned as Vila Praia Grande, it comprised five pitches and three hotel blocks, with two pitches and one hotel for Santos and the rest for NR Sports and partner Grupo Peralta.
An allied plan proposed a 25,000-capacity Neymar-branded arena in the city, with home matches split with Vila Belmiro, which also has a modernisation project. Neymar’s father said Santos playing there was the condition.
Delivery was forecast within 12 months, after which the first team would use Praia Grande, CT Rei Pelé would serve the academy and Meninos da Vila the women’s team. The site is about 21 km from CT Rei Pelé near the Anchieta-Imigrantes system.
In February, Praia Grande prosecutor Alessandro Bruscki opened an MP-SP civil inquiry into possible irregularities, focused on land by the Xixová-Japuí State Park conservation area. In March, lawyer Rui Elizeu de Matos Pereira and biologist Renee Leutz filed a public civil action, citing roughly 700 signatures.
In May, the federal government issued an auction notice for the CT Rei Pelé site, where Santos has purchase preference. The 39,027.56 m² plot is valued at R$ 79.7 million, with the session on 4 August, though the Federal Prosecution Service has urged a suspension over unresolved technical, legal, tax and property issues and potential impacts on competitiveness.
