São Paulo prosecutors have advanced their probe into more than R$ 3.4 million in cash withdrawn from Corinthians between March 2018 and 2023. Depositions of former presidents Andrés Sanchez and Duilio Monteiro Alves are set for nine April.
"At weekends and on holidays we had to hire many freelance security guards. Before I took over, Atual did this, charging about R$ 450 and paying R$ 120 or R$ 150," he told ge.globo.
The money was handed to João Odair de Souza, known as Caveira, who headed security under both administrations. Prosecutors say there is no evidence of its destination, prompting suspicion of embezzlement, and directors and staff from that period have been called to give evidence.
Prosecutors say withdrawals were authorised by former finance staff Roberto Gavioli, Matías Romano Ávila or Wesley Melo. Club records list multiple same-day withdrawals, including R$ 129.3 thousand in October 2023 and R$ 529 on 29 October 2020. Caveira is already under investigation in one case but has not yet been summoned.
The inquiry followed reports of personal expenses during Duilio’s tenure. Prosecutors say Denilson Grillo, Duilio’s former driver, received more than R$ 1.2 million in cash over three years, with indications of shell companies. Andrés and Duilio are defendants in a separate case over club credit cards.
