Maurizio Sarri could be able to call on Toma Basic from the start for Lazio at Cagliari this weekend.

Il Messaggero reports that the midfielder trained with the squad on Wednesday and should regain fitness by Saturday.

The Croatian has been influential since his reinstatement at the start of the season, with Sarri hailing him as indispensable. He sustained a knock in the 2-2 draw at Juventus a couple of weeks ago, then missed the Coppa Italia tie against Bologna and Saturday’s defeat to Atalanta.

Sarri is keen to restore him partly due to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s unconvincing outings. Aside from supplying Tijjani Noslin’s equaliser in Bologna, the Nigerian’s impact has been minimal.

Mario Gila underwent tests on Tuesday that confirmed tendon inflammation, so he will be rested for at least one match. A left-footed pairing of Alessio Romagnoli and Oliver Provstgaard is expected.

Mattia Zaccagni and Manuel Lazzari are due to have tests in the coming hours to assess their conditions. Their returns are likely to be delayed until the trip to Torino on 1 March.

Samuel Gigot remains troubled by pain in his surgically repaired ankle, and he could finish the season without making an appearance.
