With the World Cup closing in, Lionel Scaloni must name a replacement for Leonardo Balerdi, who has suffered a soleus tear in his right leg and will miss the tournament. According to AS, Argentina will confirm the call-up after facing Iceland, with Emiliano Buendía, Máximo Perrone and Guido Rodríguez in contention.

Buendía was a notable omission from the original squad. The right-sided attacker finished the season as a leading figure under Unai Emery at Aston Villa and, after a fine goal in the final, had seemed a late contender. Balerdi’s absence could now open the door.

Perrone, 23, has stood out at Como under Cesc Fábregas. He recorded three goals, four assists and 30 starts, form that has made him a sought-after name in the transfer market. A call from Scaloni could boost his prospects and he is desperate to play at a World Cup.

Rodríguez is the familiar option. The Valencia midfielder was part of the Qatar 2022 triumph, adding depth to the three-time champions, and he has ended the campaign strongly at Mestalla. He has been the pivot of Carlos Corberán’s side, and his experience could prove decisive.

Given questions in midfield, Perrone may be the most attractive route among the three profiles under consideration.
