Scamacca withdraws from Italy squad as knee issue continues | OneFootball

Gianluca Scamacca has been forced to withdraw from the Italy national team training camp as he is still feeling the effects of the serious knee injury he picked up last season according to Thursday’s reports.

Scamacca forced out of Italy camp with knee issue

Scamacca was among the 28 players called up to Gennaro Gattuso’s first Italy national team squad since his appointment as CT.

The former West Ham striker has played as a starter in both of Atalanta’s first two Serie A matches of the 2025-26 season, and is already off the mark in the league, despite missing the vast majority of the 2024-25 campaign through injury.

Scamacca suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament (ACL) during a pre-season friendly last August, and though he had made a remarkable return to action by January, he then suffered another serious injury, this time to his thigh, which also required surgery to resolve.

Though he was fit enough to start for Atalanta in their first two games of the season, Scamacca has again been suffering with pain in his knee during the international break.

The striker skipped Italy training earlier in the week on precautionary grounds after feeling some discomfort in his knee, and now, he has since withdrawn from the squad and will return to Atalanta for further assessment.

That means Scamacca will not be involved in either of the next two Italy matches, which fall against Estonia on Friday night and against Israel on Monday.

“Gianluca Scamacca left the training camp this morning,” a statement from the FIGC read. “The Atalanta striker has not fully recovered from the issue with wichi he arrived at the technical centre, and is thus unavailable for the matches against Israel and Estonia.”
