Andreas Schjelderup is emerging as Benfica’s new attacking spark after a standout display against Porto.
According to Glorioso 1904, the league clássico finished 2-2, Benfica rallied from 0-2 at half-time as the 21-year-old scored and drove their response, showing greater tactical discipline.
He has started the last nine matches, against Real Madrid (4-2), Tondela (0-0), Alverca (2-1), Santa Clara (2-1), Real Madrid (0-1), AFS SAD (3-0), Real Madrid (1-2) and Gil Vicente (2-1), then Porto. He completed only the Porto match.
In that run he scored five, two in the first of those Real Madrid games, then against Alverca and Gil Vicente, and the opener in the clássico with Porto.
Despite an uneven season, his development has become one of Benfica’s brighter stories. José Mourinho blocked a January move to Club Brugge and set about mental and tactical work with the winger.
The coach sought to lift confidence, broaden his versatility and reduce predictable attacking patterns. The transformation is visible, he now looks more complete, more disciplined and more assured.
This season Schjelderup, valued at 14 million euros, has played 34 competitive matches, 19 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 1,853 minutes he has seven goals and three assists.
