How Manchester United could do with a versatile midfield option like Scott McTominay currently.
The Scotsman was misprofiled by several United managers for years, and was played as a defensive midfielder. Yet, he always gave his 100 percent each time.
Former boss Erik ten Hag surprisingly chose to move the Carrington graduate on in the summer of 2024, bringing in Manuel Ugarte to solidify the middle of the park.
The boyhood United fan ended up joining Napoli, and while Ugarte has been a major disappointment, Scott McTominay proved to be a revelation for the Serie A giants who have utilised him further forward.
The 28-year-old scored 13 goals while registering six assists as Antonio Conte’s men romped to the Serie A title. The midfielder’s form saw him get named as the Serie A MVP of the season while he finished 18th in the Ballon d’Or standings.
He has carried on his impressive form this season, scoring four times already while also picking up an assist. Naturally, that has meant a lot of teams have been sniffing around, including Premier League clubs.
Surprisingly, the 20-time English league champions have also been linked with a move for their former ace, but they could be beaten to the punch by a team from Merseyside.
As per Fichajes, Everton are planning a €70 million offer for the Scotland international. While the Naples outfit would prefer to hold on their midfield talisman, such a bid would be difficult to turn down.
“Everton are preparing a multi-million pound offer to sign midfielder Scott McTominay, currently at Napoli, in a deal that could be worth around €70 million. The Toffees want to strengthen their midfield with a player capable of contributing both defensively and offensively.
“Everton’s interest in Scott McTominay makes sense at a crucial time. The Merseyside club is looking for an attacking midfielder to rebuild its squad, especially if a change in midfield is necessary. The 28-year-old Scot, with international experience and a Premier League past, perfectly fits the profile his manager is looking for.
“At Goodison Park, McTominay is seen as a strategic figure. Moyes values his ability to burst into the box from deep, comparing him to the powerful Marouane Fellaini of old. This quality would give Everton a dangerous option in their attacking transitions, capable of creating havoc in the opposition’s defense.
“With his time in Naples firmly established, McTominay has racked up important goals and assists and has become a key player in Napoli’s starting lineup. His contract with the Italian club provides him with stability, but his status as a crucial figure has put him on the radar of big clubs like Everton. Napoli would also have to consider his departure.”
INEOS did include a 10% sell-on fee when agreeing the deal with Napoli, so United are in for a windfall should the above report come true. Whether Scott McTominay will leave Napoli for Everton remains to be seen.
