Sebastian Hoeness faces his uncle Uli and Bayern Munich in Saturday’s German Cup final at 20:00, aiming to spring a surprise for Stuttgart. According to L'Équipe, the 44-year-old has emerged among Germany’s standout young coaches with an attacking, front-foot style.

Son of former Germany international Dieter, capped from 1979 to 1986, and nephew of Uli, Bayern’s honorary president and board chief for 30 years, Hoeness has underlined his credentials. He took charge in April 2023 with Stuttgart bottom, then kept them up via the play-off two months later.

Under him, Jamie Leweling, Alexander Nübel, Angelo Stiller and Deniz Undav have become Germany internationals, called by Julian Nagelsmann for a World Cup running 11 June to 19 July. Stuttgart’s rise is seen as one of Germany’s standout recent stories.

Calm and tactically assured, he steadied a club averaging 60,000 at home after years of churn. Three years and two months on, the 2007 champions finished runners-up in 2024 ahead of Bayern, and won the German Cup last year, beating Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the final.

Stuttgart will play the Champions League league phase in September for the second time in three years. Under contract until June 2028, he was linked when Bayern sought Thomas Tuchel’s successor two years ago but chose to extend, and Uli Hoeness now hails his work with limited means, rating him just behind Vincent Kompany.
