Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß received his chance to comment on Nick Woltemade’s sensational international break with the Germany U21s on Thursday. Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Hoeneß praised the 23-year-old’s inherent physical gifts along with his skill on the ball.
“He’s certainly very tall,” Hoeneß said of the talent Germans are referring to as the ‘two metre Messi’. “[but] the combination [of his other skills] is very special. He’s excellent on the ball, technically adept, and knows how to dribble through tight spaces. He rightly received a lot of recognition after that [U21] fixture against Spain.
“He can use height to keep opponents away from him with his arms,” Hoeneß continued. “You can also play the ball high to him, and he can hold the ball up. He really has an extraordinary repertoire.“
As the man responsible for ensuring that Woltemade continues to refine his game, Hoeneß was quick to admit that his player still had room for improvement. Ironically enough, when a reporter asked him what Woltemade lacked to become an all-rounder, the VfB trainer mentioned something related to his attacker’s height.
“He can certainly work on his heading,” Hoeneß said with a grin.
