The Senegalese federation has launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and came out swinging against CAF’s ruling that declared Morocco Africa Cup of Nations winners. According to L'Équipe, its lawyers set out their case at a combative briefing on Thursday morning.

Senegal is seeking to overturn the CAF Appeals Board decision that awarded the final to Morocco by forfeit. Counsel accused the process of administrative robbery and of violating defence and human rights.

Lawyer Seydou Diagne said Morocco was rebuffed on two key points, its bids for medals, bonuses and other rewards were rejected. Senegal argues this would strip its title yet not confer the crown on Morocco, leaving the tournament without a winner.

Morocco contests that view, considering a forfeit defeats Senegal and therefore delivers it the trophy. CAF’s executive committee is due to meet on Sunday, followed by an address from president Patrice Motsepe.

Pierre-Olivier Sur, counsel to the Senegalese federation, raised the possibility of a criminal complaint for corruption. He said their legal team will investigate potential causes and could soon file a case.

Any such move could further inflame tensions, particularly if aimed at Fouzi Leekja, Morocco’s budget minister delegate and president of its football federation. Senegal has requested an expedited CAS procedure, though it is unclear whether Morocco or CAF will agree, and any ruling may not arrive before July or August.
