Manchester United’s dismal performances last season were marked by individual errors at both ends of the pitch.
The club have taken steps to address the lack of goals which was typified by first-choice centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund scoring only four times in the Premier League by signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Ruben Amorim still needs a new striker but with two established goalscorers now added to the ranks the club are looking between the sticks, where Andre Onana’s position is under threat.
Onana has been at Old Trafford for two years and is yet to put together a decent run of form, instead becoming a shaky presence between the posts where he has made some incredibly costly mistakes.
Backup keeper Altay Bayindir has also failed to convince when given the chance and his time at United looks to be up – although attempts to ship him back to Turkey were unsuccessful.
Amorim appears willing to back Onana despite his error-strewn form last season, but the Cameroonian picked up a hamstring injury which may force United into the market.
The Red Devils have been linked before with Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens, who has reacted very positively to the prospect of moving to United.
His current team have already signed a new goalkeeper so there is every chance the 23-year-old will be on the move this summer.
And his destination could be Old Trafford, as Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the Red Devils have made “initial contact” with the Belgian side to be “informed on deal conditions”.
Lammens is one of the “main names” on United’s list if they do move for a new goalkeeper this summer. Romano also stated that Aston Villa shotstopper Emi Martinez is an option, but he is more expensive.
There is currently no indication from Romano of what Antwerp’s asking price may be, but Martinez is thought to be valued at around £40m – although may be available for €25m due to a rumoured secret clause in his contract.
Onana’s injury is not as serious as first thought, and should he surge back to fitness the need to sign a new goalkeeper may reduce, although there will still be question marks over his suitability for the role.
