Como dominated for the vast majority of the game against Genoa in Serie A on Monday evening and thought they were heading for three points thanks to Nico Paz’s first-half strike, but Patrick Vieira’s side found a late equaliser through Caleb Ekuban just moments after the hosts were reduced to 10 men.

Both Fabregas and Vieira made two changes apiece after the international break: Maxence Caqueret and Niklas Kukn coming in for the hosts and Malinovskiy and Stefano Sabelli for the visitors.

Presented with the Serie A Young player of the month award ahead of kick-off, it was Nico Paz who opened the scoring with a thunderbolt after just 13 minutes at the Stadio Sinigaglia. He pulled off a neat spin before dispatching his thumping effort into the corner of the net from almost 25 yards out.

Como were presented with a brilliant opportunity to double their advantage through Kuhn, who was sent running into the Genoa half by Megrim Vojvoda, but waited too long and could not squeeze past Nicola Leali from the corner of the six-yard box. Alvaro Morata then put the follow-up off target.

Genoa also came close to finding the equaliser before half-time, but a brave block from young left-back Alex Valle prevented Patrizio Masini from close range, shortly after Lorenzo Colombo’s effort was thwarted in the area.

Como continued to search for a second goal well into the second half, dominating in terms of possession and chances in front of goal.

Vojvoda came the closest for the hosts, drawing an important save from Nicola Leali with just over 20 minutes left to play.

In a surprise turn of events, Como were reduced to 10 men after Jacobo Ramon was sent off for a sliding challenge on Junior Messias in the Genoa half. The feeling was that the sending off was slightly on the harsh side, but the decision was referred to VAR and was upheld.

Then, in the next attack of the game, Ekuban drew Genoa level. Brooke Norton-Cuffy’s initial effort was cleared off the goalline, but Ghanaian was on hand to slam home on the follow-up: His side’s first goal of the 2025-26 campaign.
