Speculation surrounding Vicario and his long term future at Tottenham has gathered momentum, following fresh comments from an iconic figure in Italian football. As Inter Milan weigh their goalkeeping options ahead of the summer window, the Spurs shot stopper has been placed firmly in the conversation.
Walter Zenga, a legendary presence at the San Siro, believes the Tottenham goalkeeper should be among the leading candidates if Inter decide to move on from Yann Sommer. His remarks arrive at a time when scrutiny around Inter’s veteran No.1 continues to simmer, despite his experience and pedigree.
Zenga’s assessment balanced reassurance with forward planning. While he defended Sommer’s standing, he made clear that succession planning remains essential for elite clubs.
“First of all, a premise: if we focus on a goalkeeper’s mistakes, we’ll never get over them. Yann is a high-performance player, a guarantee. He has experience and quality to spare,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Pressed on the Swiss international’s defining attributes, Zenga added: “Self-control. Nothing can affect him.”
Those comments underline respect for Sommer’s reliability, yet Inter’s looming contract situation means recruitment discussions are inevitable.

When asked directly about potential successors, Zenga pointed decisively towards homegrown solutions.
“With an Italian goalkeeper: Vicario and Marco Carnesecchi in the front row, then Elia Caprile.”
That endorsement places Vicario at the forefront of Inter’s thinking, alongside Atalanta’s Carnesecchi and Cagliari’s Caprile. All three represent a new generation of Italian goalkeeping talent, each building reputations through consistent domestic performances.
Since arriving at Tottenham in a £17.2 million deal, Vicario has carried the responsibility of replacing long serving captain Hugo Lloris. His early months in north London were defined by sharp reflexes, vocal organisation, and an ability to command his penalty area.
This season, however, has offered a more complex picture. Distribution under pressure and aerial physicality have drawn criticism in the Premier League’s high intensity environment. An ankle fracture that ruled him out for three months last term also interrupted his momentum.
Even so, Spurs continue to view Vicario as a foundational figure within their evolving squad structure. His shot stopping metrics remain strong, and his comfort playing out from the back aligns with Tottenham’s tactical identity.
