As the arguments continue over the limits of the VAR protocol, Serie A is pressuring IFAB to introduce two major changes.

The Week 24 fixtures were dominated by controversy over refereeing decisions, with some that were simply limited by the strict rules on where and when VAR can intervene to correct a clear and obvious error.

Above all, Milan saw Fikayo Tomori sent off for a second yellow card when his opponent was clearly offside, while Inter scored from a corner that had already gone a good 20 centimetres over the line and should not have been assigned.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Serie A in particular is ready to pressure the IFAB ahead of their next meeting on March 1 in Zurich.

The push is to get two major changes introduced, allowing VAR to intervene in a case of a second yellow card if it was incorrectly awarded, and to evaluate corners.

However, even if these changes were to be made to the protocol, the IFAB could not enact them until the 2026-27 campaign.

The protocol was drawn up in this way to limit where VAR can intervene because otherwise it would slow down the game too much.

While some leagues, such as the Premier League in England, are calling for VAR to get involved less in the sport, Serie A is pushing for it to take more direct action on every error, even minor ones.
