This season's European competitions have not been kind to Italian clubs.

Of the seven teams who began the campaign with continental dreams, Bologna and Fiorentina were the last standing in the Europa League and Conference quarter-finals.

Unfortunately both crashed out on Thursday with La Viola's 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace not enough to cancel out a three-goal deficit from the first leg.

Vincenzo Italiano's side, meanwhile, suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of another Premier League outfit in Aston Villa, who ran out 7-1 aggregate winners.

It means that Serie A will have no representatives in any European semi-final for the first time since 2018/19, two seasons before the Conference League was launched.

The Italian top flight's last-four failure goes even deeper when applied solely to campaigns with three competitions with a run that dates back almost 40 years.

After the national side's failure to qualify for this summer's World Cup, it's a tough time to be an Italian football supporter!
