Serie C’s Coach VAR Experiment Shocks Fans.. What Happened?

Italian football witnessed unique experiment this week with the introduction of new video technology system in Serie C.

VAR for Coaches

The "FVS" system allowed managers to request video reviews for crucial decisions without official VAR referee. Each coach was granted two challenges per match.

If the referee changed decision, the coach retained the challenge for later use.

Carpi vs Juventus U23 Case

In the debut match, Carpi’s Stefano Casani used the system effectively after defender Lorenzo Lombardi received second yellow card for alleged handball.

Video replay showed the ball struck Lombardi’s chest prompting the referee to overturn the red card.

System Abandoned

Despite initial excitement, the league scrapped the coach requested VAR after one day and future matches will not allow managers to challenge decisions.

Meanwhile Serie C continues broader VAR improvements including stadium announcements of referee calls similar to the Premier League.
