Chelsea are having a horrible season, but at least they won’t get relegated, unlike one of their two old rivals, Tottenham and West Ham.

Whichever of the two teams drop, there will be players leaving, and in quotes picked up by the Evening Standard, Joe Cole pointed out that this was a great chance for the Blues to swoop.

Chelsea could raid rivals for relegated bargains

“Chelsea are in a situation now where they’ve got to look at players in that bracket, rather than looking at the top European clubs and picking off their best players,” Cole said.

“That was where Chelsea were shopping traditionally. Now you’ve got to find players on the way up.”

On that basis, Cole named players from both of the potentially relegated teams the Blues might want. From Spurs he noted James Maddison and Mohammed Kudus, plus Archie Gray as a future talent. Micky van de Ven also got a mention.

From West Ham Jarrod Bowen was his top choice, with Mateus Fernandez and Konstantinos Mavropanos also mentioned.

There are some decent players in there – we just can’t see either side selling to us when there are other teams interested, which there are bound to be. Spurs will surely be aiming to come straight back up, and won’t be under financial pressure to sell immediately.
