Sevilla are set to part company with head coach Matias Almeyda after the 2-0 home defeat by Valencia, Cadena Cope reports. The result left them 15th in La Liga, only three points above the relegation places with nine games remaining.
Almeyda arrived last summer from AEK Athens and a bright start faded in the new year. He is serving a seven-match ban for confronting an official, so he has not been on the touchline since mid-February.
Cadena Cope adds that Almeyda has been informed and a formal announcement is expected this week. An agreement with his successor is said to be close, although no name has emerged.
Last summer Sevilla were strongly linked with Jose Bordalas, then and now at Getafe. Cadena SER says Bordalas offered to take charge but the board did not consider him a good fit, while sporting director Antonio Cordon preferred a different profile, namely Almeyda.
Sevilla now look set for a relegation fight in the run-in, while Getafe sit three points off Europe and seven clear of the Andalusians. The international break gives Sevilla two weeks before facing fellow strugglers Real Oviedo.
