Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly plotting a raid of Plymouth Argyle for goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan.
Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly looking to bring former goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan back to the club from Plymouth Argyle.
That's according to The Star, who claim that Flahavan has emerged on Wednesday's radar as manager Henrik Pedersen looks to bolster his threadbare coaching staff.
After manager Danny Rohl departed Hillsborough by mutual consent just over a week before the start of the new season, a number of his backroom team also exited with him, including the likes of Chris Powell, Neil Thompson, Sascha Lense and Sal Bibbo.
Rohl's assistant Pedersen remained in South Yorkshire and signed a three-year contract to take over from the German as manager, but amid the club's current off-field problems, he has so far been unable to add to his coaching staff, with the likes of Andy Holdsworth and Giles Coke stepping up from the academy to assist with first-team affairs.
It has been a troubled start to Pedersen's tenure, with the Owls picking up just one point from their first four league games, while they were only able to bring two players - Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass - on loan during the summer transfer window after being blocked by the EFL from completing more deals.
Wednesday may have been prevented from making new signings, but although a conversation with the league's governing body is expected to take place before any appointments are confirmed, the EFL do not have the power to stop the club from bolstering their coaching team, and it seems they have now set their sights on Flahavan.
After representing Southampton, Woking, Southend United, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Oldham Athletic, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Crawley Town during his playing career, Flahavan hung up his gloves in 2016 and made the move into coaching.
Flahavan first teamed up with former Southampton team-mate Garry Monk at Leeds United before following him to Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, and the pair reunited for a fourth time at Wednesday in August 2020.
However, Flahavan's time at Hillsborough proved to be a brief one as he departed when Monk was sacked just three months later, and after spells with Wigan Athletic and the Chinese Taipai national team, he joined Plymouth Argyle in January 2024.
Despite a number of managerial changes taking place at Home Park over the past 18 months, Flahavan has remained on the Pilgrims' coaching staff under Ian Foster, Wayne Rooney, Miron Muslic and Tom Cleverley, but he may now have the opportunity to return to Hillsborough.
Pedersen said last week that the Owls were "very close" to adding to their coaching staff, and he also revealed that the delay in announcing appointments has been due to negotiations with other clubs, which could suggest that Flahavan is indeed one of those in question.
It had been claimed that former Huddersfield Town coach Andy Quy was one of the names on Pedersen's list of targets for the goalkeeping role, but he is now set to join Crystal Palace, meaning the Dane has turned his attention to Flahavan.
While Wednesday were unable to add some much-needed depth to their squad in the final days of the transfer window, it does appear that Pedersen will at least be given the chance to strengthen his coaching staff, and an experienced coach like Flahavan would be a good addition to his backroom team.
Returning to Hillsborough would give Flahavan the opportunity to work in the Championship again, but given the ongoing off-field uncertainty at the club, he may have reservations about making the move, particularly as it is far from guaranteed that he will even be paid at the end of each month.
However, Plymouth have made a poor start to life back in League One, winning just one and losing five of their first six games, and with the Pilgrims currently languishing towards the bottom of the third tier, Flahavan may still view the Owls as the more attractive option, even in their current plight.
