Sheffield Wednesday are keen on Bristol City's Joe Lumley as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

Sheffield Wednesday have been extremely busy already in the transfer window as they look to build a squad that is capable of winning promotion.

The Owls’ off-field issues were well-known, and there were doubts about the future of the club after the club had entered administration following mismanagement by Dejphon Chansiri.

However, there is a much more positive outlook at Hillsborough now following the takeover by a US consortium, but they have inherited a weak squad, even by League One standards.

Sheffield Wednesday weighing up deal for Joe Lumley

To their credit, the new regime has wasted little time in trying to rectify that, with Sil Swinkels, Ricardo Santos, Callum Slattery and Harry Gray just some of the new faces through the door.

Yet, a lot more is required, and it appears the Owls are also looking to strengthen the goalkeeping department for Henrik Pedersen, which was inevitable as Pierce Charles closes in on a move to Man City.

And, according to journalist Joe Crann, Wednesday are targeting Joe Lumley, with the keeper currently contracted to Bristol City.

The 31-year-old was way down the pecking order at Ashton Gate last season, and he actually joined Wednesday on an emergency loan in October, playing in defeats to Middlesbrough and Oxford.

It remains to be seen whether the Robins would sanction an exit for the stopper, as Radek Vitek, who was number one last season, has returned to Man Utd after a successful loan.

But they have finalised a deal for Sam Tickle from Wigan, and there is an expectation he will be the main man in goal for new boss Michael Skubala, although it’s unclear who will be his backup.

Joe Lumley would be a smart signing for Sheffield Wednesday

Obviously, Charles is a very exciting and talented keeper, who did so well for the Owls last season despite their struggles, so it’s unrealistic to think Wednesday will attract a replacement of a similar calibre.

But, in Lumley, they would be getting someone who is approaching 250 career appearances, and the bulk of those have come in the Championship.

So, he would be a sensible signing, even if there would be some who believe the club should be targeting a better keeper as a number one.

Yet, Lumley would back himself to be a reliable option in the third tier, but, if he was brought in as backup, he has the experience that Pedersen would want for someone in that role.

This summer window was always going to be difficult for Wednesday given the sheer number of players they need, but it makes sense that they’re keen on players who know about the EFL.
