The Owls are currently in the process of securing a new owner after being placed into administration last month due to Dejphon Chansiri’s inability to satisfy a £1m HMRC bill.

This act saw the Steel City side slapped with an automatic 12-point deduction, leaving them cut adrift at the bottom of the Championship and almost certain to suffer relegation to League One.

Chansiri’s woes meant that Wednesday were placed under five embargoes, which significantly impacted how they could operate in the transfer market, with loan deals for Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass their only business.

The cash flow forecasts submitted to the EFL over the past few months haven’t allowed the Owls to add any more talent to their ranks, even in the form of free agents, which has left the squad threadbare.

However, positive news could be on the horizon.

After Chansiri placed the club into administration, there has been a huge effort from supporters to start backing Wednesday financially.

This has improved the Owls’ cash flow, with the Star reporting that they are in discussions with the EFL over whether they could regain the ability to sign free agents, which is something usually allowed outside of transfer windows.

The Star have now stated that former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper is the prime target if Wednesday are allowed to sign players.

Cooper was linked with the Steel City side during the summer, after leaving CSKA Sofia and becoming a free agent. The Owls weren’t able to complete that deal at the time, but have always retained their interest in the defender’s services.

When speaking to BBC Sheffield, Wednesday’s joint-administrator Kris Wigfield stated that they were “hopeful” that the club could get “one or two” more players in after the upcoming November international break.

Given the youthful complexion of Wednesday’s squad depth, Cooper’s presence would be extremely welcome at Hillsborough.

A number of products from the Owls’ academy have played more first-team football than they could’ve previously imagined this season. Whilst it is brilliant exposure to the professional game, it isn’t overly beneficial for the club’s competitiveness.

After slowly coming out of a period of much distress, Cooper will be able to use his experience and know-how inside the dressing room to help keep the atmosphere positive.
