Former Union Berlin striker Sheraldo Becker and former Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer have both expressed their glee at being re-united as FSV Mainz 05. Becker’s new Bundesliga outfit reacted quickly to bring him back to German football after a two-year-stint in Spain on transfer deadline day. After two years abroad, the Suriname international made clear he wished to remain in Germany beyond the end of his six-month-loan stint.
“It’s quite extraordinary to be able to sign a player of his caliber at such short notice,” Fischer noted at his pre-match press conference last Friday. “We have to accord credit to our transfer committee for pulling it off.
“The transfer was finalized ten minutes before the deadline closed,” Fischer went on to reveal. “We had other options. But I saw Sheraldo as having an advantage because I simply know him. And what’s also important is that the player knows the Bundesliga.“
Becker’s former coach turned to him immediately in last weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against relegation rivals Augsburg. The Amsterdam native logged 27 minutes off the bench, visibly working hard to make his presence felt in the crucial 2-0 home victory.
“I hope he can shake it off,” Fischer said of Becker’s underwhelming two years in Spain with Real Sociedad and CA Osasuna in Spain. “He has incredible pace, he looks for the direct route to goal, and also sets up goals. I’ve high hopes for him.“
“The Bundesliga suits me better,” Becker remarked in an interview with the Monday print edition of Kicker. “In Spain, the game is not as intense as in the Bundesliga. It’s more relaxed. My intention is stay in Mainz for longer.“
