There’s never-ending churn in the Anfield camp, as my sources delivered some startling news that could shake Reds’ fans to the core. It concerns Argentine midfielder and Liverpool workhorse Alexis Mac Allister.
The 27 year old arrived at Anfield in July 2023, but the journey and accolades came way before that. He made his senior debut in 2016 with second-division Argentinos Juniors (the same club that spawned Diego Maradona), helping them secure promotion into the Primera División after the 2016/17 season. His play caught the attention of Brighton’s sharp-eyed scouting unit, and he was signed to the Seagulls in Jan. 2019, immediately returning to Juniors on loan. That summer, he would go on a short-term loan to Boca Juniors, and in Feb. 2020 return to the southern coast of England.
His next three seasons with Brighton saw Mac Allister mature as a player, but it was his performance in the 2022 World Cup that raised his profile to the globe.
He was named Man of the Match in Argentina’s final group stage win over Poland (scoring the opener), and assisted Ángel Di Mária’s goal in the final against France.
Returning to Brighton as a World Cup winner, he had a standout 2022/23 season, scoring 12 goals and 3 assists in 40 games as the Seagulls finished 6th in the league and qualified for the UEFA Europa League competition.
Liverpool was quick to latch onto the up-and-coming midfielder. They signed him over the 2023 summer for a reputed $46M fee, up to $71M with performance add-ons. Mac Allister has not disappointed, and was a regular starter for Jürgen Klopp as well as Arne Slot. As a box-to-box, predominantly defensive, midfielder, he doesn’t score much, but maintained 7g/7a over his first two seasons.
This year, however, Mac Allister’s impact has waned a bit. He still gets games (he’s played in 34 already) but is no longer a regular starter. The rise of Ryan Gravenberch and utility player Dominik Szobsklai have limited his minutes. Florian Wirtz’s big money transfer hasn’t helped either.
All this leads us to the big news. Our sources have said that Liverpool will be conducting a full review of Mac Allister in May, likely when the Premier League season ends. The end result of that review could be a sale when the summer transfer window opens. He’s still in his prime, and one of the top box-to-box midfielders in Europe. No wonder top-tier clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly keen on him.
