Manchester United have been lacklustre in front of goal in recent weeks, especially with their top striker this season Marcus Rashford omitted from the squad.
The England international has failed to win the favour of his manager Ruben Amorim who has left him out of the club’s last four contests against Man City, Spurs (in the Carabao Cup), Bournemouth and Wolves. Aside from the Derby showdown which witnessed a dramatic come-from-behind victory, the Red Devils lost all of these fixtures.
Moreover, Joshua Zirkzee has been struggling for form since making his summer switch from Bologna. He was already failing to deliver the goods under his compatriot Erik ten Hag, and his situation hardly improved with Amorim’s arrival. The Dutchman has only found the back of the net on three occasions this term.
For his part, Rasmus Hojlund has emerged as the Portuguese’s first choice upfront, but some of his recent outings and demeanour have left the fans frustrated.
Therefore, the club has been urged to enhance their striking department in January, but finding the right fit in the middle of the season remains challenging.
This is why an internal solution could be worth a try. But the question is whether Amorim and his staff are willing to bet on an 18-year-old bomber.
Since the start of the season, Gabriele Biancheri has been firing on all cylinders for the club’s U21 and U18 squads. As Statman Dave notes, he has been directly involved in 17 goals (scoring 16 and assisting one) in 17 outings across all competitions.
The teenager is a Welsh Italian who started his career at Cardiff City before making the move to Carrington in February 2023. He has also been prolific on the international stage, scoring eight goals in as many appearances for Wales U19.
